Please note: the agenda item about Graaskamp Park has been postponed. Lorrie Heinemann, President & CEO of Madison Development Corporation (who owns and manages the park) was unable to attend the December meeting. It has been tentatively rescheduled for the January meeting.

All are welcome, however in order to vote at this meeting, you must have paid your 2017/2018 dues prior to the beginning of the meeting. The 2017/2018 membership year started in October. Please feel free use the contact tab above to check membership status or inquire about agenda items.

Pennsylvania Park Public Art – Meet the Finalists

You are invited to a public reception with the finalist artist/teams selected to develop a proposal for a public art project in Pennsylvania Park. On Monday, December 4, the artists will be in town for a site visit and orientation.

Besides getting a better feel for the Emerson East Neighborhood and meeting with City staff, we would like for them to have the opportunity to share more about themselves with community stakeholders.

A public reception is scheduled from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on Monday, December 4 at the Madison Central Library – Room 301 (201 W Mifflin Street) – On street parking free after 6pm. Alternately, you may wish to park in the Overture lot.

 At this meeting, you will have the chance to hear a brief artist talk (15-20 minutes) and then spend a few minutes letting the artists know what is important to you about the Park, neighborhood, and City (10-15 minutes).

Pennsylvania Park Public Art- Provide feedback now!

As a part of the redevelopment of Pennsylvania Park, the City of Madison posted a Request for Qualifications (RFQ), last month. This is the first step to finding an Artist to create a focal piece(s) that will inform the rest of the enhancement to the park, which along with future landscaping will make this area a more distinct entry to the neighborhood

RFQ is simply a resume focusing on the Artist’s prior experience (especially with public art projects) and their education. After a review, the City will invite up to three of the artists to a site visit and to create a specific Art proposal for the site. The City’s Madison Arts Commission, with consultation with the neighborhood, will decide which Artist will have the opportunity to create their vision in our park.

So the RFQ submission deadline closed Tuesday November 14, and so they are now online for the public viewing. There were 15 submission from a wide range of Artists; from large Art/design companies to artists just starting out in public art.

3 things to know before emailing Karin Wolf:

  • Time is running out – The sooner you email Karin the sooner she is able to share your thoughts with the committee, so she would prefer you email her before the end of business this Friday (TODAY), however you can email her until 8:00am on Monday. 
  • Keep your comments ‘clean’ – Your comments are going to be publicly accessible, and will be read by the Artists, some of your neighbors and city officials, so keep you comments on-topic, professional and family friendly.
  • This is only the first step – while the RFQ is a great way for Artists to introduce themselves to us it is not a proposal of what they want to do in Pennsylvania Park. Once the artists are narrowed down and submit their proposal, there will be another opportunity to comment on the proposals.  

There is a meeting scheduled on Monday, 11/20/2017, 3pm at SuperCharge! Foods, 1902 E. Washington Ave. A this meeting the Madison Arts Committee will come to a decision on which artists go on to the next round. This meeting is open to the public and another venue to provide feedback.

El Sabor de Puebla Restaurant on Agenda of Plan Commission

El Sabor SignEl Sabor de Puebla, the restaurant that is moving from its Willy Street location to 305 North Fourth Street (formerly 4&20 Bakery Cafe), has submitted a Conditional Use Application to the Madison Plan Commission. This application is necessary for them to operate as a restaurant/tavern at the Fourth Street location.

The application will be discussed at the next Plan Commission meeting:

In addition to attending the meeting you can also provide comments by emailing the Commission at planning@cityofmadison.com.
Here are a few highlights from El Sabor’s application:
  • The restaurant would like to serve wine, beer and mixed drinks (mainly margaritas) to patrons in the restaurant and on the patio. They will apply for a beer and liquor license (separate from Conditional Use).
  • El Sabor is planning hours of operation of 10am-10pm.
  • They are aware of noise concerns by neighbors. They are proposing to work with neighbors to reduce any outside noise after 9pm.
  • At their current location they are open 7 days a week. They are contemplating that the number of days may change according to demand. At the new site they might be open 5 or 6 days a week instead of 7.
